Tuesday, September 19, 7:00 pm. Venue: USC Annenberg ASC 207
Tuesday, Cory Doctorow, USC's U.S.-Canada Fulbright scholar, year-long visiting professor, award-winning sci-fi writer and co-editor of boingboing.net hosts the next lecture in his Technology and Public Diplomacy speaker series. These talks are open to the public all semester long and Cory has a great list of speakers.
This series covers "Hollywood's secret war on your living room." As Elizabeth mentioned at the end of our last class, code is everything and this series focuses on how technology is restricted in the name of protecting copyright and other exclusive rights over knowledge goods. This is a fundamental issue to any online community and university.
Tuesday, Cory welcomes Michael Ayers, the Toshiba lawyer who negotiates their DRM deals for a discussion on digital rights management, copyright and new technology.
For anyone who wants a great overview to the issues of "Set-Top Control," I recommend listening to the MP3 of Cory's opening talk. I've already gone back and listened to it a second time. It's a wonderful introduction.
